Nice Guys Finish Last

I want to know how I can find a job or create my own business to take advantage of my qualities as a person. It seems I get taken advantage of at every job I've ever had. I don't complain enough, and I work very hard no matter what I'm assigned. That said, I'm looking to start a business for myself that will embrace these qualities and allow me to profit from them. I want it to be personally rewarding. This is very important to me. I was thinking about charity work, but I just don't know where to start. I've always tried to help my friends/neighbors whenever possible even if it was something that required a lot of effort on my part. (This is why I get taken advantage of so much personally and professionally) There has to be something I can do and make a good living while embracing these personality traits at the same time. So far, all I've gotten is burned by people I thought were my friends and/or partners. Has anyone else had any experiences like this and gotten through them by learning to adjust? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
